Some People Can’t Lose Weight So They Blame Their Genes

Here’ an eye opener - Eight hundred million people are hungry, but a billion are overweight - and the figure is going up. Many people believe the culprit is their DNA, or in other words, they inherited the problem.

Professor Steven Jones, a professor of genetics at University College London writes - “Without doubt, a small minority of overweight people does have an inborn problem. A mouse mutation, dubbed obese, turned up in the Nineties. It makes a certain protein that controls the animal’s appetite. When damaged, it leads to compulsive eating. A few children are born with the same mutation and, unless treated, become grossly overweight.”

Bottom Line… The science of inheritance is more sophisticated than it was. Dr. Jones continues to write, “Now we know that pregnant women with a poor diet (fast food victims included) have fat children not because of their DNA but simply because they are fat.”
