Make Ice Cream With a Pillowcase and a Fire Extinguisher
Part 1:
You’ll need a 10 pound tank of liquid CO2, or in other words, a fire extinguisher. Next you fire it full blast into the pillowcase for about 10 seconds. At this point you’ll have several pounds of powdered dry ice.
Safety Tip:
Don’t handle the dry ice as it can give you frostbite!
Part 2: Now all you do is pour it into a bowl of ice-cream ingredients -
- two cups each of half-and-half and heavy cream
- two eggs
- three quarters of a cup of sugar
- two teaspoons of vanilla
- a dash of salt
Stir until frozen.
Preparation Tip:
Add the dry ice SLOWLY to avoid ending up with a BLOCK of rock hard ice cream. In fact Theodore Gray over at Popular Science had to microwave his batch JUST to get it back to frozen.
Safety Tip:
Because they’re intended to be used in restaurant kitchens, CO2 fire extinguishers are usually filled with food-grade CO2. So… Do not try this with a dry-chemical fire extinguisher
