Lo-Fart Beans
Most beans fall into the category of good carbs and they also can produce a fair amount of gas. A scientist is hoping to start a silent food revolution after producing his first harvest of low-fart beans, really. Dr Colin Leakey, 71, has grown six tonnes of the new variety, which he has proved produce less gas when eaten. Dr Leakey, a fellow of King’s College, Cambridge, plans to sell his low-gas beans in frozen packs, rather than cans, so they can be used in a range of dishes.
He said: “I can see no reason why they shouldn’t be available by the spring. It depends how fast I can persuade other people to move.” He first hit the headlines in 1994 when he developed a device to measure human wind. His flatulence indicator was designed so he could prove his strain of South American manteca beans really do cut wind.
Now Dr Leakey has teamed up with wholesalers Phaseolus, in Bottisham, Cambridgeshire, who hope to market the beans to manufacturers They are already in negotiations with an organic food company over adding the low-gas beans to their frozen meals.
